Celebrating Children's Literature Project
Award-winning children's book illustrator/author David Small and his wife, author Sarah Stewart, are coming to town this month as part of Miller College's Children's Literature Project.
Miller College's Children's Literature Project culminates this month with a visit from award-winning children's book illustrator/author David Small and his wife, author Sarah Stewart.
Small is a two-time Caldecott Award Winner. His latest book, "Stitches," a graphic memoir, was released in September. The New York Times said of Small at the time, "The best of his more than 50 books, including the seven he also wrote, are characterized by an ebullient visual style and silly, fanciful plots."
Small and Stewart, who reside in Mendon, will be the featured guests for Children's Literature Project events March 16-18.
Since the beginning of the school year, several hundred third-, fourth- and fifth-graders throughout Calhoun County and their teachers have been participating in the Children's Literature Project, learning how to write and illustrate their own books.
Participating schools have selected the best books from each grade, and have entered them in a countywide contest. Winners will be selected from each grade in three categories: best illustration; best writing; and best overall book.
The final-round contestants will be feted at the Arthur W. Angood Awards Dinner, featuring David Small and Sarah Stewart, at 7 p.m. March 17.
Small and Stewart also will be featured along with other local authors at a book sale/signing from 5-8 p.m. March 16, and will be presenters at an educational symposium March 18.
In addition, an exhibit of Small's illustrations continues this month the Art Center of Battle Creek, 265 E. Emmett St.
