What should I look for in daycare centers?
It is very important that your daycare center be licensed by the state.
Daycare centers that support children's early reading skills...
- Keep an orderly classroom that encourages children to enjoy learning
- Have adults that read a lot to the children, and talk with them and listen carefully
- Use many creative ways to help children learn language
- Have many books that children can handle
- Have lots of print on labels, signs, and posters
- Have letters made of different materials so children can pretend to write
- Play games that ask children to listen carefully, such as "Simon Says" and "Mother, may I?"
- Ask children to name colors, shapes, animals, familiar objects, parts of the classroom
- Have singing and rhyming games
- Encourage scribbling, drawing, writing
