More than one-third of U.S. workers are parents of children under 18. About 75% of those children are 5-18-year-olds. Two-thirds of parents are employed full-time. Their school-age children are on their own after school from 15 to 25 hours a week.
Supervised programs for teens are rare; those that do often serve at-risk kids. It is challenging to find something acceptable to teens and also affordable for parents.
There is widespread misunderstanding about what after-school programs include. It is more than just 'child care'---it can provide opportunities for homework help, tutoring, hands-on learning, and social skills learning.
Research shows that kids in after-school programs do better in school, have better school attendance, and have greater confidence about their abilities.
