What are signs that my child is ready to read?
Children develop and learn at different paces and in different ways. Research suggests that the following are signs of being ready to read, often by age 5. Remember that these are just guidelines.
- Understand and follow spoken directions.
- Recognize the beginning sounds of words and sounds that rhyme.
- Listen carefully when books are read aloud.
- Show interest in books and reading.
- Might try to read, showing pride in what they can do.
- Can follow the series of events in some stories.
- Ask questions and make comments that show they understand the story.
- Know the difference between print words and pictures, and know that print is what you read.
- Recognize print on signs, television, boxes, etc.
- Understand that writing has a lot of different purposes (e.g., signs tell location, lists can be for grocery shopping, directions tell how to put something together or where to go).
- Know that each letter in the alphabet has a name.
- Pretend to 'write' or scribble messages.
