Welcome to our Community Literacy website where LITERACY resources are linked to the community.
Many people think that children learn to read in kindergarten or first grade. However, research has shown us that the building blocks for reading and writing start at birth, long before children go to school.
Children learn about language when family members talk, laugh, and sing, and when they respond to all the sounds in their world. They learn more when adults read stories to them and when they see adults reading newspapers, magazines, and books.
How adults talk to and read with their newborns and toddlers is the most important factor in their child's success in reading!
