Welcome to our Community Literacy website where LITERACY resources are linked to the community.
The Twenty-First Century Community Learning Centers After School Program is preparing to culminate its Third Annual Book and Movie Date event. Patterned after the Battle Creek Reads endeavor, Twenty-First Century has chosen a Medieval Thematic Unit with the title "Once Upon a Time!". All of our sites in the Battle Creek Public School system, grades K-10, are reading Marguerite De Angeli's Newberry Award winning book, "The Door in the Wall", as the foundation for all related activities. Other supplementary expository and narrative texts are available by grade levels.
Big ideas associated with the Medieval Period are being explored in a variety of ways; ideas like castles, tapestries, coat-of-arms, heraldry, knights, chivalry, clothing, food, health, myths and legends. Hands-on activities and resulting projects like castle construction, tapestries, banners, shields, catapults, etc. will be on display during our Grand Feast held in the Great Hall of the Castle of Lady Ann J. Kellogg.
Prior to the Grand Feast, our students will be treated to a movie at Cheap Flicks Theater. The movie will have as its setting the Medieval Period.
Staff and students have embraced this unit heartily! Be prepared to see some awesome displays at the Feast! Further surprises await our guests on this magical evening. Anything can happen "Once Upon a Time!".
Movie Date - Tuesday & Wednesday (March 9 & 10) at Cheap Flicks Theater, 4:30-6:30pm.
Grand Feast- Thursday, March 11, Ann J. Kellogg School, 4:30-6:30 pm
